AUTHOR TALK at Patch Cafe with Rebecca Watson talking about ‘I Will Crash’

‘Profoundly moving, funny and beautifully written.’ Michael Magee

‘Completely immersive.’ Natasha Brown

‘Exceptional and startling.’ Colin Barrett

It wasn’t just the being hurt, it was the endlessness of it, us misfiring without break without end without rest, unable to peacefully be in the same place. It’s been six years since Rosa stopped talking to her brother. And now it’s too late: too late to forgive, too late to make amends. But her brother had tried, hadn’t he? With him gone, Rosa must look back at the years of silence, at everything she has long held as true. As she gathers together the pieces her brother left behind, their shared history curves into a question mark. Who was her brother? What was the other side of the story?

‘A one-of-a-kind storyteller.’ Observer

From the acclaimed author of little scratch, this is a moving, powerfully honest novel about how we love, how we grieve and how we forgive.

Biography

Rebecca Watson is a novelist. Her debut novel little scratch (2021) was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize and the Desmond Elliott Prize and was adapted into a play at Hampstead Theatre (2021) and New Diorama (2023). Her second novel I Will Crash was published last year to critical acclaim and was recently longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize.

Watson was chosen as a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and as one of the Observer’s 10 best debut novelists of 2021. Her non-fiction has been published widely, including in FT Weekend, the Guardian, the TLS, Granta and British Vogue. In 2022, she presented a documentary for Radio 4 — where her short stories have also aired.

Chrissie Richards & Christine Gallant present Visual Stories (private view)

Chrissie Richards & Christine Gallant present Visual Stories (private view)

Come join us for Chrissie Richards & Christine Gallant’s Visual Stories private view!

More info below…

Chrissie Richards and Christine Gallant met when they both had studios in Ardleigh, near

Colchester.

They have exhibited together a number of times. Although their work is very

different, they are both interested in sharing visual stories. Their work is deliberately

ambiguous preferring to invite the audience to define what it means to them individually.

Christine Gallant is a 3D Assemblage and Paper Collage Artist working from her studio in

Colchester.

A finder of forgotten objects. Teller of hidden tales. Seeker of extraordinary stories.

Christine’s studio holds pieces of treasure, miniature pieces of history all waiting for their

new stories to be told.

As a child Christine spent endless hours hunting for treasures everywhere she went, a

piece of patterned china dug up in a garden, a piece of fabric from an old sewing box,

beautiful pieces of aged and mottled papers, an old book...The hunt continues, it’s a

passion and an inspiration for her artwork.

The idea for a piece of work is never a fixed plan, the inspiration comes from an object, a

photograph, an old book, an old sketch book, an old toy, and will form itself into the

finished piece, it can take many different directions and ultimately may be something

unexpected.

Christine says ‘I have no style or aesthetic that I adhere to, I like to explore my creativity,

explore my inner self and let it thrive in my artwork.’

Chrissie Richards is an artist living and working in Brightlingsea on the Essex coast in a

house right next to the sea; currently she works on her kitchen table.

Chrissie is particularly interested in linking the past, present and future together. Memories

and experiences are recalled and expressed by leaving a visual history in the making of

the work. The work is often comprised of multiple layers of collage or paint which

represent the rich tapestry of life and experience and the story of how the piece was made.

Chrissie’s work begins by observing people, places or photographs, this usually leads to

sketching and then imagination and memories take over and inform the painting. The work

is firmly rooted in the formal qualities of art making with a particular emphasis on colour,

composition, pattern and shapes.

A strong belief in the importance and value of creativity inspires her practice and artist led

workshops.

Hidden Landscapes (Jack Briggs Miller Private View)

Hidden Landscapes

Private View

Thursday 6th of March - 6.30pm - 9.30pm

An exhibition of macro photography by Jack Briggs-Miller (exhibition runs from March 4th - April 1st 2025)

Jack Briggs-Miller is a photographic artist & graphic designer based in Colchester.

Jack’s work is inspired by the subject matter of dreams, memories & the visualisation of the unseen; with exploration & experimentation at the heart of his practice. Through the use of handmade lenses & experimental techniques he seeks to find new ways to explore curated scenes or found objects.

“Hidden Landscapes” utilises macro photography to study the unseen details of rocks, fossils and crystals.  With the use of experimental lighting techniques, the crystal's internal and external surfaces are able to be illuminated simultaneously, thus revealing the hidden colours & patterns found within their natural forms. This process allows Jack to explore the hidden landscapes within their structures that would otherwise be unexplorable.

Electro Music, Poetry & Songs at Patch

A night of live poetry, songs and electronic music to lift your spirits & inspire you as we begin 2025!

Featuring Live Performances By:

Dawn Vincent, poet who describes themselves as a, "poet with a colourful but irritating brain they like to write about. Tries to be funny. Sometimes is. But a hopeful human? Always".
Instagram: @dawnislosingtheplot

Filip Rodak, electronic artist
Filip Aleksander Rodak, going online by a contraction of his first and last name "filiprodak", is a 17 year old music producer and songwriter based out of England. He began producing his own music at the age of 12, after discovering music apps on his father's phone. Since then, after his discovery of FL Studio, he was hooked, and has been producing tracks almost non-stop. Filip mainly draws inspiration from the golden era of EDM in his music, influenced by his idols: Madeon, Justice, Daft Punk, Porter Robinson, etc. He also manages to sneakily sprinkle in the aesthetics of disco, accenting his tracks with violin stabs, phased guitars and synths, making his sound recognisable, but unique.

Fenix Wild: Indietronica Singer-songwriter
London born Fenix moved to Essex in 2020. Originally a classically trained singer and pianist, she writes with acoustic instruments, synths, and electronic beats to create songs that embody her signature sound. Lyrics include themes of love, divinity, gratitude, nature, loss, and the passage of time, with listeners describing her songs as uplifting, soaring, emotive, and soothing.
Performances feature projections of Fenix's visual art, created outdoors from man-made, organic and futuristic images to form colourful shadows for each song.

A Christmas Carol in Concert

Minty Spectre return to patch for the 2nd year running with A Christmas Carol in Concert (an atmospheric narration of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale accompanied by an enchanting vocal quartet)

This timeless narrative comes alive in Minty Spectre’s original adaptation of Dickens' cherished text, presented with characterful narration and captivating live singing that weaves its way through the heartwarming story.

Join our cast, featuring a narrator and vocal group, to encounter the host of well-loved characters who play a role in Scrooge's redemption, from the wise counsel of his deceased business partner, Marley, to the joyous memories of his merry one-time employer, Fezziwig, and the infectious spirit of his high-spirited nephew, Fred.

Throughout this remarkable and intimate production, the audience is serenaded by carefully selected Christmas songs, presented in exquisite a capella arrangements. Medieval festive numbers, beloved carols, and contemporary classics are harmoniously performed by the intimate close-harmony group.
